Christmas Eve 2015
Walking the High line was one of the cooler walks we did in New York. This elevated train track dates back to the early thirties when it used to support freight trains running through the city. It stopped in the 1980s and has been left abandoned until they came up with the idea of turning the track into a public walkway 10 years later.
It is quite a long walk way, probably takes around 30mins to complete (depending how distracted you are by the landscape, architecture and art installations that surrounds it or how many stops you make off the High Line) There are several points where you can enter the High line from, I can’t recall whether we started at the very beginning of it but we did get on at the end closest to the Hudson Yards and finished at the Whitney Museum end.
We got off the High Line about half way through when we made a stop at Chelsea Market for a lunch break. This stop took a while longer than expected as we just couldn’t decide what to eat from all the eateries! That and wandering around the stalls took some time (there was a section where its just an Artist’s flea market). We decided on having tacos (which was good!) and snacked on some mini doughnuts from The Doughnuttery – they had some interestingly good flavours like Maple and Bacon mmm. You could pick up some of their doughnut sugars as a souvenir, we did!
From the photos I’ve seen of the High Line, it looks different in every season so it will be great to walk through again if I’m ever in New York again during Spring/Summer when its lush and green. Definitely a great way to see a different part of New York, from another level 🙂
